Primed, Richmond Magazine
Fascinated by the local roller derby scene, I pitched this story to my editors at Richmond Magazine. This personal essay profiles three women and explores my eight weeks as roller derby fresh meat. I worked with a writing coach to produce this feature. It was tough; all of my previous work in the first-person were middle school journals and casual blog posts. But I'm proud of the final product. You can read the pdf here, or read this peice online.
I was also able to flex my visual creativity muscle with this roller derby project. It was a surreal experience to art-direct the photoshoot and design the layout for my own byline. (Excuse, the humble brag, but this was a proud moment!)
Finally, perhaps because I hadn't made fun of myself enough, I produced with footage from my very first practice.
